HERE'S SOME TRIVIA ON PERSONALITY…
- The concept ‘personality’ has its origins from a Latin word, ‘persona’ – which interestingly enough means ‘mask’.
- Personality refers to how each of us appears in front of others and across different social situations.
- Personality is what sets us apart. It includes but is not limited to the exterior: that is, whether we have a pleasing presence, whether we come across as being unkempt and ugly or well-groomed and decent, whether we come across as being boors or bores or brilliant or bright...
- We are born with some innate attributes and characteristics – however, there is much that we can develop and nurture. Our voice (the physical properties) is determined by birth but how we speak (the tone) is something that we can develop. Similarly, our looks are what we are born with but how we dress (clean and neat attire) and whether we have clean habits, a well-groomed personality (which does not mean wearing designer clothes) and a pleasing one are what we can work on and develop.
- Personality is 'interactive'. That is, it not only depends upon what we think of ourselves but depends upon how others see us.
- We want to be seen as possessing certain traits (responsibility, punctuality, capability, dependability....) and as having powerful or pleasing personalities across different social situations.
- We generally want the identity which we present in front of others to be accepted or admired or liked by others…
- Personality can be viewed as a triadic structure composed of the individual, the everyday realities (work, studies, jobs, careers, families, friends), and the larger questions (purpose of life, who and what matter...).
- As we will discuss through our interactive sessions - among other factors - humour, wit and presence of mind are worthy companions in the journey of personality development.
