WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The name of our Institute (with all respect to Shakespeare) has been chosen with care.
Some of Suvro Sir's old boys insisted that our institute should be named after him since our institute is based on Suvro Sir's ideals, vision and values about living the good life, and ones he has put into practice for over 30 years. Suvro Sir's vision and canopy of values are directed towards making learning an enjoyable experience without sacrificing depth or discipline. He sees personality development (as do all genuine teachers) as a life-long journey.
While elaborating upon the matter of personality development - the following is what we transmit:
- that developing one's personality is connected to maturing as a human being
- that it is connected to living the good life
- that the ideal of personality development is to teach one how to live the good life, to be happy in the long run, and to be truly human
So that's about the first three words. Why do we call our Institute - "Tutorials"?
In brief, we decided upon "Tutorials" to signify the ancient gurukul ideal (not how it deteriorated in practice), where the aim of character building was not about producing replaceable cogs in a machine. Character building, as an ideal, was viewed as a complete enterprise connected to developing knowledge and wisdom, the self and to nurturing relationships between the self and others. (The component of mentor-ing occupies a pivotal position here.) The use of the word "Tutorials" connects also to the western ideal: where classes are conducted in small groups which involve special and focused attention; where students and the tutor engage in discussions and debates about a wide variety of subjects. So the notion of "Tutorials" for us encompasses the services that we offer through our workshops in personality development.
Aristotle said that the good education of a child should be the highest purpose of government. That is what we believe as well.
To get a glimpse of our primary aim, in case you have not seen it as yet - here is a short list.
